ON THE WATER FOR NOVEMBER
HELLO, MY FELLOW PISCATORIAL PRACTITIONERS,
While you are rolling that around in your head….Listen to this….”Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. Just pretty much leave me alone.” Now, there is a message in there somewhere & you and I are going to find it. First though…..Let’s kick the Old Fishing Club around a little bit!!!
OCTOBER was a month of Lows & Highs. It was with great sadness that we learned of the loss, of Bill Furgason’s grandson in Iraq. Then we had a couple of our Fishing Pals (Charles Burke & Ben Davi) get under the weather. I talked to both of these guys & they are hanging in there…..Let them know you are thinking good stuff about them. It could be our turn next time!! On a brighter note, the weather for the month was outstanding. Jack Scherer won the “Best Fishing Story” at our Breakfast Meeting & you have got to corner Sparky (AKA Bill Furgason) and have him tell you about his recent Salmon Fishing Expedition with Big Fish (AKA Wayne Hill) & Drifter (AKA Ron Gibbs). We have several Club Members in this year’s Salmon Club, but it is yet to be seen who will be Crowned King/Queen Salmon for 2006. This will be announced at one of our December Meetings. U-DA-MAN Fishing Tournament, now that was a successful event & we had 6 Club Members who reached out to help make it so. They will be recognized at our 1 Nov. Breakfast Meeting. Thanks to a lot of effort by Big Fish, we have signed formal adoption papers, with SOLV, to make Big Creek Reservoir our Litter Patrol Responsibility for the next 2 years. Bob Abbott tells me he recently walked Beverly Beach, and it looks like we are not going to need a Beach Patrol until we get a big storm and/or January. We closed the month with a very informative & fun field trip to the Hatfield Marine Science Center. The “Behind the Scenes Tour” was impacted a bit by the nasty weather, but all 22 members who attended were “Real Troopers,” in spite of the weather. The Salmon & Steelhead Fishermen are looking for rain to turn the fish on to start the fall run. So keep on Fish’in Folks !!!
NOVEMBER weather, as you all know begins to get dicey. The upside is it stirs the fishing up, the downside is the downside !! (I’ll bet right about here, you are saying….What’s he going to do with that walking stuff ?? Well stay with me !!) I told you all that I would give you some feedback on my trip to the North Umpqua. It was a “Crow Eater.” Yes, the Steelhead humbled me, but I learned a lot & even got to where I could cast 80+ feet of line with reasonable accuracy. I’ll be back to this beautiful river next year & perhaps the Fish Gods will smile on me then. Moving on, we will be having 2 guests join us for our 1 Nov. Breakfast Meeting to recognize our Clubs contribution to the successful U-DA-Man Fishing Tournament. This reflects positively on our Club & more importantly directly helps the Salmon Enhancement Program for the Yaqunia River Ecosystem. We will also bring to this meeting, the Preliminary Ballot for the up coming General Election of Club Officers for 2007. Our 16 November, General Membership Meeting will be another milestone meeting for the Club. In addition to a guest speaker from the SOLV Organization, we will be holding our 1st Annual General Election of Club Officers for the New Year. Please make every effort to attend this very important meeting. Your vote will directly impact how “Your Fishing Club” conducts it’s self for 2007.
Stay with me now…..here we go !! Can you imagine what kind of world we would have if everybody walked around with the, “Just pretty much leave me alone” attitude?? I read an article a while back & the substance of it was, imagine how different our world would be, if at the end of our day each of us could answer positively to the question, “Have You Made a Difference Today?” That got me to thinking……How could I do that…..Should it be a Big Difference……Do I need to do more than 1 each day…….How much effort do I need to exert…….Who’s keeping score…….What’s in it for me…….Well, you get the idea. Then it occurred to me, “Do onto others as you would have them do onto you.” Now that was a pretty simple bit of logic. Suppose, I applied that logic to my environment. Then, it occurred to me that’s what our Fishing Club is all about. Our Ethos Statement has the same logic and all we need to do as Club Members is stay engaged in our various Club Activities and “We can make a Difference” to our members & our community. So I encourage each of you to consider adopting this logic into your life and ask yourself each day, “Have I Make a Difference Today?”
In closing, I’ll leave you with this thought……Never miss a good chance to shut up !!!
Well that’s the top of the news as it looks from here. Hope to see you on the water. THE HOOK
