ON THE WATERFOR FEBRUARY 2007

ON THE WATER FOR FEBRUARY 2007

Welcome to the Optimist’s Outlook….Everybody keeps telling The Old Fisherman, spring is just around the corner….That may be so, but my “Snuggies” still feel pretty good. Recently, a couple of us made a scouting run up to Palmer Creek, which feeds into the Siletz River, and it was “Colder than a Well Diggers Arm Pit” !!!  I remain optimistic….as I look out my window and see the sun on the ocean….What a great place to live & what great friends to share our common interest in fishing.

3 Mystery Questions today:  1.) Who is The Surveyor ??.... 2.) Did you get your new Fishing License yet ??.... 3.) Can you say, Blepharoplasty ??   I am only going to answer 2 of those questions, but first let’s take a quick look at the fun month that was……

JANUARY marked our 1st Salmon Club Award Winner for 2006 (Congrats to Kevin McCarthy…40lbs, 41.5in, Coho). All members that caught a Salmon are now sporting a spiffy pin on their Club Caps & Yes its true; I caught the smallest Salmon (12.5lbs).  Then we honored 2 of our own (Ron Thomas & Bud Roark) with Certificates of Appreciation for the services they rendered to The Club. It was my pleasure to present Wayne Hill with a carved Salmon for being our all around “Go to Guy.” We also welcomed 4 New Members (Dale & Jen Rice, Jack Blower & Hank Bryson). Hank has the honor of being our 50th Member !!! While all that was going on…our Schooner Creek Fish Trapper Teams were out there in the cold & wet doing “Good & Avoiding Evil, Mostly”….Then came the Highlight of the month….Our own Phil Reed gave us one of the most professional & informative seminars on Steelhead Fishing we have ever had the pleasure of attending. Phil’s commentary emanated from his in depth understanding of the Siletz River. It is evident that Phil is a Professional River Guide that truly loves his craft. His ability to communicate the necessary skills to us, so that we can be better Steelhead Anglers, was outstanding. I for one, plan on being one of his future paying clients & I would encourage you to consider doing the same. I would like to take a moment, to Thank All of You for supporting our proposals to contribute $5 Bucks, once a year, to The Club’s Coffee Fund & to pursue becoming involved in the Coast Watch Program by adopting mile 223 of Beverly Beach. It is appropriate to recognize that Jack & Ginny Scherer & Bob Abbott have carried this responsibility & now The LVH Fishing Club will continue in their footsteps. Well Done to you all !!!  Did I mention, that The Creek Meister (aka Dave Dinsmoor) & several of his desperados conducted our 1st  Litter Patrol, for 2007, on Big Creek (check out the pix on our Web Page). Also…. Don’t miss our 1st Steelhead Fish Along, at Moon Shine Park, on the Siletz River (30 Jan.)  The Wrench (aka Brian Hudson) will be looking for you at 9 AM at the Club House to organize car pools for the run to the river !!! The next time you see The First Lady (aka Barb Dudley) let her know what a great job she has been doing as our PAO & keep an eye out for her New Fishing Club Column (The Line) in the February Edition of our “View From The Hill” News Paper.

FEBRUARY…..This month is going to be a Hum Dinger !! The Wrench has another Fish Along Scheduled (20 Feb.) for Rainbows at Big Creek….In addition, The Creek Meister now has an additional responsibility as The Beach Meister of mile 223 of Beverly Beach……Keep a sharp eye on The WALL for more details on both of these fun activities. I want to let you all know, that when Sparky (aka Bill Furgason) found out that Tom Roederer was having some eye problems that impacted his ability to help with the Siletz River Fish Trap… Bill took the initiative to get the Club linked up with our friend Casey Deckard, at ODFW. Bill is now coordinating volunteers for the Siletz River & Palmer Creek Traps. He is looking to provide 1 person to go with Casey on M-W-F of each week. Casey will come up to the Club House to pick up the LVH F.C. Trapper. If you would like to be involved in this worthwhile & fun activity please contact Sparky & we are pleased to report that Tom is feeling much better. Let me tell you about this month’s exciting tour…..on the 15th we will meet at the Club House at 9 AM in preparation for a run up to the Oregon Oyster Farms. This facility is located on the Yaquina River about 10 miles up river from Newport. I am excited about the tour, but I never met an Oyster that I liked !!!

As to the 3 Mystery Questions……I have been remiss in not getting my Fishing License yet, it will happen next week !!   Yes, THE HOOK is going to get his Old Droopy Eye Lids fixed (Blepharoplasty). My peripheral vision has been reduced to a point that surgery is required to “re-hang the Wall Paper.” Several folks in the Club have had this operation done & they tell me it’s a walk in the park….I’ll let you know….Being just a little skeptical, I am expecting something like a bad back cast….way up in some tree limb….with the only fly that the fish are taking !!!  Now as to whom “The Surveyor” is, I am going to see how good you are as a detective & let you scratch around with that until next month.

In closing, You all know I put you thru an E-Mail Address change as a result of us acquiring a new ISP & Computers…all is now well in Computer Land. We also have a Super Bowl Game coming up & I am pulling for the Bears. Yes, it’s true my New Honda Element (aka The Tree Hugger) could climb a tree, if it could get a hold of it !!  Best of all….on the 11th….Mary & I will be celebrating our 40th Wedding Aniversary. This wonderful lady has put up with The Old Fisherman for all of these years…..Would you do it again you ask ???......You Bet’ca in a Philadelphia Minute !!

Let me leave you with this thought…..Helen Keller, said it best---“The best & most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen nor touched---but---are felt with the heart.”  Well, that’s the top of the news as it looks from here…Hope to see You on the Water !!            THE HOOK
