ON THE WATER FOR JULY
INTO THE BACKING !! Fly Fishermen have this happen occasionally when they get into a good fish that runs hard and long…….That was the kind of month June turned out to be. The first strike was “Living with Bears” and Tom Roederer did a “Bang Up” presentation for us. This was followed by a Rod & Reel Work Party at ODFW, followed by a “Grand & Noble” Fishing Day for Children at Big Creek Reservoir. This fish continued to run on into an exciting and well attended field trip to the USCG Station here in Newport. They gave us a fine presentation on their mission and then we got to go aboard the various types of boats they have on call. Then it was off again, thanks to Big Fish, to another successful Litter Patrol on Big Creek. The fish cleared the water and lo and behold Shutterbug found a riding lawn mower along the road as the “big find” of the patrol. When the fish hit the water again, it ran deep into our First Club Fish Along at B.C. Reservoir. Our numbers were small but our fun was great. Everyone caught Trout with Alan Canfield being the “Big Fisherman of The Day”. We finally got our line back and caught & released our fish at our Quarterly Club Board Meeting.
I want to acknowledge all of the effort various Club Members put forth to make June such a fun & successful month. As always Shutter Bug’s great photo’s spiced up our résumé and Big Fish was right in the thick of things. It’s great to welcome “The Drifter” (Aka. Ron Gibbs our Administrative Officer) back into the fold and we are pleased to acknowledge Jeannine Roederer as our newest Lady of The Club. We are now over 40 strong & still looking for more Ladies of the Club.
Can you believe that the 4th of July is just around the corner…….We kick off July with our 4th Club Breakfast Meeting at the Agate Beach Golf Club on the 6th. This will be followed on the 20th & 21st with a Guest Presenter (Casey Deckard of ODFW) giving us the necessary background information we need to meet him the following day up at the Siletz River Fish Trap. He tells us we will be “up close & personal” with a lot of Summer Run Steelhead. This should be a really exciting & rewarding Field Trip. One caveat, Casey’s wife is due to have a baby very soon…….Think good thoughts for her…….Depending upon the timing of this blessed event we might have to off set Casey’ Visit & our Trap Visit by one week. Stay tuned to our web site, Big Fish will keep us posted and he will also post us on the July Litter Patrol date !! Are we a flexible Fishing Club or What ??
“About Half the Lies you Hear are not True”….Now doesn’t that sound like something you would hear at a Fishing Club Meeting ?.....Well it is true that by the time you all read my ramblings. I will be in Montana with a fly rod in my hand doing the best I know how not to look like some guy that fell off of the back of a vegetable truck. I am about to enter the land of Rubber Pants and Shallow Water. The Brown Trout that live in Rock Creek (it’s really a river) have been around a while and they have a way of keeping me humble. Have you ever noticed it’s the good fish that you lost that you remember the most ? I have a lot of these kinds of memories every time I return to The Rock! A lot better fishermen than I fish this water, but I have a secret fishing theory that works for me. It may work here in Oregon and I am going to tell you what it is, but you have to promise to keep it a secret. It’s the “Stranger” theory, the way it works is you find out what fly all the other fishermen ( I use this term for both genders, I hope that’s ok) are using and tie on some weird & different fly, i.e. A “Stranger” that these Old Brownies have never seen before. I know it sounds “Strange” but when the fishing is slow you would be amazed how frequently it works.
In closing, I’ll leave you with this thought…….Mae West always said, “Too much of a good thing can be wonderful” I’ll let you all know how Montana turns out !!
Well that’s the top of the news as it looks from here. Hope to see you on the water !! The HOOK
