ON THE WATER FOR JULY ( 2009 )

ON THE WATER FOR JULY     ( 2009 )

Hi Folks >< Let’ see what we have collected in the Tackle Box this Month >> ?? << FLASH >< Scientists have recently recalibrated the Age of the Earth & determined that we are actually 2.3 Billion Years Old … That’s a Billion more than the last calculation >> Whew !!  That was a Close Call !~!~!    How’bout that HUMMER (AKA .. Tough Horse in Chinese) >< Yep a Chinese Heavy Equipment Co. bought this Bad Boy from GM, which will make them the 1st Chinese Company to sell cars in the US of A !!   Then there is the Puppy Mill Bill, which if passed will be Really Good News for all of Oregon’s Puppies !!!  Have you heard about the Devil’s Lake “Solar Bee” Controversy ?? It seems, that these “Bees” are floating electromechanical devices that are supposed to gobble up the Green Slime that is so prevalent in Devils Lake >>> The downside is >< They are very ugly & very expensive >< Stay Tuned !!  Lurching Right Along >< CONGRATULATIONS are in order for The HILLS >< We are reliably informed that Wayne’s Daughter, Heather, was recently married to a fine fellow by the name of James Miller >>> There are some Great Wedding  PIX on the WALL showing “Pa Hill” giving the Bride Away >< With his Shot Gun !~!  Sure sounds like it was a “Hum-Dinger” of a Wedding & we Wish the Miller’s our Very Best.   Looks like the Yachats Bear Lady’s Idea of Feeding Bears was not to well received by the Judge !!! It seems like Bernie Madoff also had some similar Bad Luck with a Judge >> He got 150 Years !! ( You have probably figured out, that neither of these 2 Folks are LVH FC Members !!)  Are you aware, that we have a “Bullet Deficit” >??< Yep, this could be Good News for the Bears > but < Actually, it’s just a good example of what unfounded fear can do … Not to worry, perhaps the LVH Posse can learn how to use Bows or Sling Shots !!!  Oregon Dept. of Forestry is predicting this year to be a Big Fire Year … Watch out for & report all Lightning Strikes.  Did you see the positive results, reported in the News Times, regarding the dramatic reductions achieved in the amount of bacterial discharge going into Nye Beach? This reflects very positively on our Newport City Engineer, Lee Ritzman & his Staff. I am sorry to report, that our Good Friends, Matt & Debbie Matheney moved over to Eugene … Matt was a Good Guy & very fine Club Member.  We wish them both the Very Best. On a brighter note >< our Pal, Charles Burke seems to be doing a lot better ... Att’a Boy Charles !!!   YEA !!  Score One for all of the Metolius River Watershed Fans > It is now considered an “Area of Statewide Critical Concern” < but > I do think this whole development process, in the future, should be handled in a more evenhanded manner.  If the recently released Global Warming Report doesn’t do it for you >!!< Try this OSU Study regarding the Reproductive Survivability Fitness of Hatchery verses Wild Steelhead & Salmon. It seems that this recent study shows conclusively, that these Hatchery Fish have significantly Poorer Reproductive Survivability Rates. The real significance of these findings clearly demonstrates that Hatcheries may not be the Future Sustainability Panacea we thought they were.   In closing, let’s Keep Our Fingers Crossed, this month, for a Positive Newport >< NOAA Home Port Selection >< This decision will be made sometime, in August …… How’bout a brief June Look Back >>>>

JUNE started off with a Bang !!  This was the 4th Year of the Big Creek Kids Fishing Day Event. As you know this is a jointly sponsored ODFW / ANWS Event. Our Club along with the CCFF & many others provide “Boots On the Ground” support for this effort. In spite of the inclement weather, the event was well attended by our Coastal Children & their Families. It is unfortunate, that the ANWS Event Coordinator did not see fit to recognize the supportive efforts of ODFW, our Fishing Clubs & the many Other Volunteer Contributors, whose combined efforts make this event possible. Suffice to say >< Please accept Our Sincere Thanks for a Job Well Done to All of You wonderful “Boots On the Ground” Volunteers !!!!  Moving on >< Ellie LeMaster, our Beach Mistress, pulled off a Fun Beverly Beach Litter Patrol & she proposes that we do another  on the 16th of July.  At our Mid-month meeting, we were delighted to Welcome Phil Reed’s Pal, Steve Lichtenberger, as our June Guest Speaker. Steve provided a wonderful Introduction to the Art of Fly Fishing (AKA, Lint Flicking !!). We want to Thank Phil for bringing Steve to our FC Gathering & Steve for a Job Well Done.  I don’t want to let the moment pass without recognizing the contributions made by all of the Big Creek “Critter Litter Basket Weavers & Installers” … We Got-R-Done on the 18th by installing Baskets at all of the 15 B.C. Bag Stations. Our Pal Mike Rosica continues to make Weekly Runs “Up the Creek” to monitor & change out the bags as needed. We would be Hard Pressed to keep up with the Litter Volume without Mike’s Dedicated Support. ( I want to mention the very Nice Compliments we recently received from Lee Ritzman, the Newport City Engineer & Steve Stewart, the Water Treatment Plant Supervisor, regarding their appreciation of our ongoing B.C. Litter Patrols.)  I hope you have been following all of the Sturgeon Fishing Action being reported by Wayde Dudley’s Super Narratives & PIX >>> Well here is another Hot Tip >>> You need to get the Full Scoop on the Recent Tillamook Adventures of Phil, Bill & Frank !~!~!      Now, let’s see what July has in store for us >>>>

JULY has a nice tempo <> Summer Time Slow <> which is just Great …….. We lead off this month with a “Double Do-Rah” Breakfast, that will involve the presentation of 2 ODFW Certificates of Appreciation to our Friends, Virginia Tardaewether & Parker Ogburn. This will be followed, on the 16th, by another Beverly Beach Litter Patrol under the Leadership of Ellie LeMaster >><< Then on the 23rd, we have a very Special Tour & Visit with the “Net Lady” (Sara Skamser) down at the Newport Marine Terminal Buildings. Sara & her skilled staff make, by hand, the Big & Expensive Trawler Nets used by the Commercial Fishing Fleet. We have Dean Fleck to Thank for arranging this visit with Sara & her Company, Foul Weather Trawl. Next time you are down at Englund Marine, give Dean an Att’a Boy for his continued support of our Fishing Club !!!

In closing, let me leave you with this thought, “Anything is possible, if you don’t know what you are talking about.” There’s a Message in there someplace, but Dog Gone if I can figure it out !~!~!

Well, that’s the Top of the News as it Looks from Here …… Hope to See You On the Water >>>>>>>  THE HOOK
