On The Water For September

ON THE WATER FOR SEPTEMBER

HELLO YOU ALL, that’s what they say down south. I figured it would work OK for us fishing folks here in Newport, Oregon. I am feeling better this month, so I am going to kick up my waders and have some fun. Just to pique your interest. I need to warn you that I am going to be telling you a little something about LOVE, just like they do on TV. Now don’t run off on me. Have I ever left you hanging with a bad back cast in the bushes?

Let’s just take a quick look at what we were up to in August. The first shot out of the cannon was the Bob’s Beverly Beach Patrol. Of particular note was the high number of dead birds we found. About a week later, we heard about the “Dead Zone” off our coast…maybe some connection? In any event, special thanks to the wonderful bunch of you who came out to make it a very successful event and it sure was appreciated by Bob Abbott. Big Fish was able to get Dean Fleck, of Englund Marine & a Club Member, to share with us some of his expertise regarding the various skills and techniques required to successfully fish for and “occasionally catch” Salmon & Steelhead. We were also fortunate to have with us, James Ray of ODFW. James spoke with us about the STEP Program and the wide range of volunteer opportunities available to us. We have previously been involved with James in the very successful June Children’s Fishing Day Event. Good things are happening on Big Creek Reservoir. We did not need to hold a full fledged Litter Patrol because Big Fish’s experiment of placing litter bags at various fishing locations seems to be working. We did do a bag change, but the fisherman we talked with seem to be using the bags. Mark one Att’a Boy for our Club. As you know by now our Public Affairs Officer, Shutter Bug (AKA: Charles Burke) had to stand down because of recent health problems. The good news is that First Lady (AKA: Barbra Dudley) agreed to stand up and keep us in the Public Affairs Business. Welcome aboard Barb and let’s continue to keep Charles in our prayers. Thank you all for supporting us on the Liability Waiver Issue. This will protect the Club and its Officers. No, I have not forgotten the LOVE Stuff, just hang in there!!!

September starts with a fun Social Breakfast Meeting, on the 7th, at our old watering hole, the Agate Beach Golf Course Restaurant. Big Fish will be hosting this event, in as much as, I will be up on the Metolius River for my last shot at, late season, Fly Fishing for Trout. Please remember that you all are encouraged to bring guests to any of our Club Events. On the 21st, Alan Canfield, and we hope his son Doug, will be talking with us about the finer points of fishing for Salmon on the Alsea. Big Fish is working on putting together a Boating Fish Along on the Alsea sometime in late September or early October….Stay tuned for more information on this fun event. Just a word on what great Club Members you all are, please put your thinking caps on and let us know who, in your opinion, you might want to nominate as our 2006 Joe Longo Award recipient. Joe as you may recall passed last year under Mr. Jack’s (AKA: Jack Scherer) Club Presidency. The Board feels it only fitting that Mr. Jack’s name appears first on the award plaque for 2005. By the way, Bud “The Fastest Knot in the West” Roark is making a custom plaque for this annual award.

Well, this is the moment you all have been waiting for!!! Let’s talk about LOVE!!!
Here’s what Mr. Word (AKA: Webster) says, Love implies intense fondness or deep devotion and may apply to various relationships, situations or objects, i.e.  brotherly love, sexual love, food love, money love, love love & Fishing Love. That’s where we come in. What makes our Club work is our LOVE of FISHING. You can see it in our Ethos Statement and how we relate to each other at our meetings and events.

In closing, I’ll leave you with this thought…….A four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman’s yard, climbed into his lap and just sat there. When his mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, “nothing I just helped him cry.” Now that works for me.

Well that’s the top of the news as it looks from here. Hope to see you on the water.                       THE HOOK
