THE BROWN PELICANS HAVE RETURNED !!!  Now that’s a Good Sign Pard……Yes, I know it means Summer is just around the corner !!!

 

“APRIL is going to be a HUM DINGER”……That’s what I said in last month’s column….Boys Howdy, it turned into a “Super Sized Hum Dinger” what  with all of the Club Activity. Let’s just “Hit the High Spots”……Saturday was Opening Day of Trout Season…A great Clam Guy (Bill Lackner) Breakfast…3 Successful Responsible Angler Classes under our belt…Wayde Dudley’s brilliant Idea of collecting & sending Fishing Gear to our Troops in Iraq…ODFW Schooner Creek Trap Support wrapped up after 9 successful months… Siletz Trap Support will continue… Lot’s of Clam Digging & a bit of Crabbing, Another Outstanding Commercial Fishing Boat Tour… Special Thanks to Dean Fleck & Mike Pettis… Our 1^st “Fish/Litter Along” on Big Creek…Receipt of 2 very Complimentary Letters (City of Newport & James Ray, ODFW)…We started a Big Creek Ambassadors Group to join ranks with the Creek Meister (our 1^st Ambassador is Gene Newbill)…Frank Stout came thru with our New Super Cool F. C. Club Jackets….Did I mention, we now have a JACK SALMON MASCOT provided by, none other than, Jack Scherer.

 

Now the problem with this kind of “High Fluting Stuff” is that you have to take the “Bitter with the Sweet.”  Sadly as you know, we lost Jack Blower. Please take a moment the next time you see Anita & give her a kind word. There are a couple of other members who have been over “40 Miles of Bad Road”….A kind word, would go a long way in letting them know you care about them too….(Charlie Currey, Charles Burke, Bill Furgason & Vern Charles’ Son Tim. If I missed anybody….It’s because I’am getting OLD !!!!  On an up note….Welcome to 2 New Members, Bill Lackner & Walt Summerton, give them a “Howdy” the next time you see them.

 

 Now I’am going to take a Quantum Leap…..Yes, I know the last time I did that, I got my Waders Plum Full of Water...but…here goes anyway !!!  The issue here is a HELIPORT……Sure you know, that’s a place where Helo’s take off & land. What you ask does that have to do with the Fishing Club ???   Well…we have a bunch of our F.C. Members who also give of their time as members of our LVH CERT Emergency Response Team. This wonderful outfit has been doing “Good Stuff” to make our LVH Community a safer place to live. Ron Thomas got hooked up with the owner of the Agate beach Golf Course, Terry Martin, & Terry agreed to allow our CERT Folks to use his facility as an Emergency Heliport. Now this may not seem like a Big Deal, but it will be….When the “Poop Hits the Fan” with a major Emergency !!!  It’s also Really Cool that this effort was worked out by 2 Members of our Club. Well Done to you guys & all of our Neighbors who are involved with CERT !!!!!!!  

 

MAY…MAY…Dog Gone, I am getting a “Little Goosey” about making predictions about how this month will turn out after last months activities, But one thing is for certain…..When “Snow Birds” like these guys (Gene Newbill>>Dick Garvey>>Ron Gibbs) return you know something cataclysmic will happen !!!!!!  WELCOME HOME to all of you & your wives !!!!!    (Now, will all of you guys get your yards in shape.)

 

We will be doing some fun stuff this month….Don’t miss the Breakfast, we are going to anoint Dean Fleck & Mike Pettis with “Good Guy” Certificates for being so supportive of our Club. Then there is the on-going Good Work The GENERAL & his Responsible Angler Program Teams are doing in the Newport Middle School. Followed by a fun tour of the USCG Station. We also will be involved in a BIG Operation to provide support for a Children’s Fishing Day Event being held at Eckman Lake, just outside Waldport. This is an ODFW (James Ray) & Church sponsored event held each year. The Event Schedule has been BLASTED out to you all indicating the need for volunteers to help us with the 4 days leading up to & including the Actual 19 May 07 Event. Please consider helping us with the worthwhile community effort. Contact any one of the Day Team Captains, if you can “Throw Your Hat in the Ring” with us.   Thank You All in Advance, for Your Support !!!!

 

IN CLOSING…….Let me leave you with this thought….”What lies behind us & what lies before us are tiny matter compared to what lies within us.” If you didn’t know better, you would think Oliver Wendell Holmes was speaking about the Members of Longview Hills Fishing Club.
