ON THE WATER FOR MAY (2009)

ON THE WATER FOR MAY        ( 2009 )

H1 N1 Flu Virus = PANDEMIC IMMINENT >><< Holy Jumping Baldy !!!! >>> When I opened the Tackle Box to see what we had collected this month, this Flu Pandemic Issue was the 1st Thing to Jump Out !!!  There is a little Good News, in that, this Bad Boy does not seem to have raised it’s ugly head in our state. Some additional Good News is that we have Meds to treat this Swine Flu & most folks who have gotten it, seem to be recovering without too many serious side effects. However, it looks like the Days of Kissing, Handshaking, GI Joe’s, Pontiacs, & Chrysler are going into the Memory Bank !! Now, if we can just get some Sustainability Mitigation on the use of Commercial Gill Netting for Salmon, on the Mouth of the Columbia River, we’ll be a step closer to home. The controversy continues over development Issues in the Metolius River Watershed, but there may be some room for compromise, with the various groups trying to find some middle ground. I should mention that the Dam Valsetz (Proposed Water Supply) Issue continues to “Rattle Around” >< Our friend, JAMES RAY will be representing ODFW & attending a meeting this month, regarding this issue, & we will look to him for some Meeting Feedback. Just In >><< Keep an eye out for the visiting “Killer Whales” >< Yes, they seem to visit the Depoe Bay Area each year, about this time, with a Culinary Interest in Seals, Sea Lions & Baby Gray Whales. Let me also mention, RYAN MINOR’s Sturgeon Fishing Offer & Please keep our Pal HANK BRYSON in your Good Thoughts. He is On the Blue Water, some where North of Cape Falcon, participating in the Opening of the Commercial Salmon Season (Good Luck to you, Hank). On a sour note, the Chinook Season for our Coastal Area looks “Grim” … Regulations will be forthcoming by the 1st of May & we have 2 Ambassadors (PHIL REED & RYAN MINOR) attending an ODFW Meeting, which is intended to gather Inputs from Professional Fishermen ….. Our 2 Guys, will give us the scoop on how the meeting went down & we’ll share it with you when we get it. On a Brighter Note ><  ELECTRIC BILL caught & released a Beautiful Steelie on the Siletz >< Then there was the Beautiful “Big Creek” Rainbow caught by BERNIE COOPERSTEIN >< Plus, our CCFF Pals had a Fun Saltwater Perch Fishing Adventure ++ They even made the News Times. Did I mention, the successful Day of Rock Fish Tagging recently experienced by Surveyor Dudley + Some Great PIX & How’bout Jerry Gibson’s quick recovery from his recent Ladder Fall Injuries >>>>> Att’a Boys All Around !!!       Let’s Lurch on, for a Look at April >>>>>

It happened, because of the hard work & dedication of a wonderful bunch of SMOLTERS >(Make sure your get Matt’s Recipe for his World Famous Salsa)< All of you who contributed & stood watch at the Beaver/Duck Ponds deserve the many compliments our FC has received from our friends at the ODFW. It is this same High Degree of Commitment represented by the Production of our FC’s 1st Video > FISHING FOREVER < This endeavor, over the period of a year, involved significant investment of Time & Treasure by 3 very dedicated men ( WAYDE DUDLEY, MAC ANDREW & PETER VINCE).  it was our pleasure > on Premier Night < to recognize them with Certificates of Appreciation for their very creative team effort. We continue to receive glowing compliments regarding their work. Speaking of successful endeavors >< Let’s touch upon >> Schooner Creek Trap: Special Thanks to the 3 Trap Teams & to the DUDLEY’s for making the “Last Trap Run” on the 13th >< MIKE ROSICA continues to do Weekly Big Creek Litter Patrols >< The Newport Middle School Responsible Angler Program continues to run on schedule, with graduation, for the Class of 2009, set for the 21st of May >< Our Annual Oyster Farm Pilgrimage was fun for all attendees >< Well Done to GINGER STOUT & BARB DUDLEY for hosting a Book Reading (Salt in our Blood) by our friend MICHELE LONGO EDER. In closing, I like to do something a little different this month. Bob Abbott occasionally gives me a magazine >< REMINISCE >< This fun epistle contains all kinds of PIX & Information that all of us Oldies but Goodies would recognize. To that end, some of you know, I was born in 1940 & it just so happens that the Mag. he gave me had a section entitled, Time Capsule 1940 >>Here are a few 1940 Prices of Stuff that will be familiar to many of you<< (2 Dr Plymouth Sdn, $739) >< (Mans Tweed Suit, $25) >< (Roast Beef, 29 cents per lb.) >< (1st Class Stamp, 3 cents) >Last, but not least< (Gasoline, 18 cents a Gallon) >< I am sure some of you have Better Price Recollections than a Mere 1940 Kid, but there you have it for what is worth !!!
